Radiesse by Merz is an injectable dermal filler used to smooth out age lines and wrinkles and enhance facial tissues that exhibit fat loss. Formerly known as Radiance, Radiesse is primarily used to eliminate nasolabial folds, deep wrinkles, depressed scars, peri-oral lines, and oral commissures. Unlike the widely-known Botox treatment, Radiesse can also be used for cheek enhancement and recontouring of the jaw and chin.
Popular for its long-lasting results, many modern patients chose Radiesse over other forms of dermal fillers because its components are not derived from animal products. In fact, all Radiesse’s substances also occur in the human body, such as the non-toxic calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres that naturally occur in human teeth and bones which are suspended within a biocompatible gel. These microspheres efficiently bond the weak facial tissues, thus enhancing the appearance of the aging skin. The natural composition of Radiesse virtually eliminates the patient’s risk of developing post-treatment allergic reactions.
Application of Radiesse is performed by an experienced practitioner through the use of fine needles. The entire treatment procedure can only take less than an hour and almost doesn’t require a downtime. Local anesthesia may be applied to completely eliminate the stinging sensation of the needle. A patient may experience minor swelling or bruising following the procedure but it can easily be made unnoticed by applying makeup, and usually goes away after a few days.
What sets Radiesse apart from other skin aging treatment options is its capability to stimulate collagenesis, the human body’s own production of new collagen, which creates a significantly lasting effect on the skin. Due to the capacity of Radiesse to plump the skin and stimulate new collagen production in the body, its results are proven to be the longest-lasting among all injectable dermal fillers today. While many injectable treatments these days also come at a high price and require frequent touch-ups, many patients treated with Radiesse reported successful results even two to four years after the treatment procedure.

Your experienced injector will recommend the best treatment for your concerns. Generally, Botox may be the better choice if you have small, specific areas you want to target, such as crow’s feet or fine lines on the forehead, Botox’s higher molecular weight can help keep the treatment more localized, preventing it from affecting nearby muscles. If you have used Botox before and were satisfied with the results, it might be best to stick with what you know works for your body.
